20th June

Yesterday we played Witley.

Witley won the toss and asked FCC to bat first.

FCC: 48 all out in the 16th over, including 25 runs off the bat
Witley: 52 for 5 off 9 overs, including 40 runs off the bat

Witley won by five wickets.

After the highs of last Sunday this was very disappointing. We were unlucky to lose Calum in the second over, for no runs, off a direct hit on the stumps from long-off, and it was down-hill after that. Seven of the remaining ten batsmen were bowled by straight balls, most of them simple long-hops which were slashed at and missed, and the other two dollied simple catches to mid-off and mid-on. Only Josh(12), David (6) and George (4) managed to put bat on ball. The only reason they took sixteen overs to get us out was some that they had some difficulty with the sloping pitch which gave us nearly two overs in wides and many near misses.

We only had time to try three bowlers, Freddie (4-3-15), Josh (2-1-15) and Calum (2-1-12) in an attempt to at least take some wickets, and in this we did succeed, taking out four of five of their best players, but one of them stuck around, and with the help of a few full tosses and long-hops he hit 27 runs (undefeated) and we were all on the way home by half-past seven.

For our practicing, we desperately need to learn (1) how to pick-up a bat as the bowler comes in, (2) how to swing the bat through the line with some conviction, (3) to hit the ball under our noses and not two feet in front of our bodies, (4) to push the more innocuous, yet straight balls carefully off the square and take the single(s), (5) to play solid defensive shots to good straight balls, and (6) to wait the for the many "off-line" bad balls which can be hit for runs.

We have ten days before our next game, which is away to Grayshott, and the players picked for this will be those who can show some improvement along the lines mentioned above.

16th June

Yesterday we were treated to a wonderful game between two of the better sides in our half of the league. Very competitive, but with terrific good spirits (the boys clearly know each other well) and a game which went down to the last two or three balls of the last of 40 overs. Well done to all the players in both teams.

Churt won the toss and elected to bat first

Churt CC: 129 for 6 off 20 overs - 85 runs off the bat and 44 extras (including 30 wides and no-balls)
Frensham CC: 124 for 8 off 20 overs - 94 runs off the bat and 30 extras.
Churt won by 5 runs.

Churt scored a steady six runs an over almost throughout, and our attack did not look too threatening. Whenever we did string together a few miserly overs, we managed to gift them runs through extras. However, Churt's enthusiasm for quick singles led to no fewer than three run-outs, thanks to the under-arm throwing practised last Friday ! Unfortunately, we still have something to learn about concentration on each ball, and an avoidable four overthrows and four byes (8 runs) were to cost us dearly in the end. Eoghan and George each found a good straight ball and took a wicket, and Calum held another catch to give Jonny his second wicket of the season.

Churt felt they had done enough to win (we needed more than 6 an over), but Jonny (13) and Calum (23) got together for four or five overs and hit 38 quick runs, and we had scored just under 60 after ten overs. Mark and Ben made 4 each, then Josh (11) and Sebastien (7) boosted the rate a little, with Tom (5). Our running for singles was very good (no run outs either !) but there was no doubting that Churt had more firepower in their attack, and with only two overs to go we only had 99 runs and had lost seven wickets - 31 needed to win. However, on the first ball of the nineteenth over Churt took another wicket, but they must have had second thoughts as Calum came out again, and proceeded to hit 22 runs off nine balls, including 20 off the last over, to finish 45 not out ! Alas it was too late, and we were left to rue our generosity with extras and some lapses of concentration in the field.
